“We’re convinced we’re doing what’s best”: Rescue team works to free stranded whale off German coast

From Global News.

A member of a private rescue group said Saturday that bureaucracy was delaying the rescue of a humpback whale stranded along the Baltic Coast.

Veterinarian Janine Bahr-van Gemmert said that every step had to be approved by the German government. "Anything that isn’t 100 per cent in line with the specified plan requires written authorization. And that naturally causes quite a delay. We don’t just have to provide information; we have to submit applications," said Bahr–van Gemmert.

She added that the group was convinced they were doing what was best for the whale. "Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this at all," said Bahr-van Gemmert. "And it is trying to fight its way out of there. We see that time and again. It was incredibly active yesterday."

Experts had previously argued against rescue efforts, saying chances of the whale surviving were low, however new veterinary assessments showed the whale to be in better condition than previously assumed.
