Global National: April 18, 2026 | Iran reverses course, places restrictions back on Strait of Hormuz

From Global News.

There are just four days remaining before the end of the two-week ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. And despite U.S. President Donald Trump appearing to be convinced a deal with Iran could be finalized shortly, all of that changed on Saturday. The regime reversed course just 24 hours after reopening one the world’s most critical oil checkpoints, reimposing restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran says it did so because of Trump’s ongoing naval blockade of ships entering or departing its ports. Candice Cole reports.

The war in Iran is playing into China’s long-term vision of a new world order with the country securing a stable supply of discounted energy after the U.S. extended the waiver on Russian oil sanctions. But as Jeff Semple reports, there’s more than oil at stake in the Strait of Hormuz and that’s bad news for Beijing.

Canada is facing a crisis in long term care staffing. In Nova Scotia, more than 2,000 workers have been on the picket line since Monday, in a wage dispute with the provincial government. While an essential care agreement is supposed to ensure the basic needs of residents, family members and residents say that doesn’t always happen. Heidi Petracek reports.
