A gunman killed a Canadian tourist and wounded several others at the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico on Monday before killing himself. According to Mexican authorities, another Canadian tourist was among the wounded.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that “it’s a sad day,” calling the tragedy a “terrible circumstance." He added that he appreciated Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s “personal attention to the matter.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand also spoke to reporters Tuesday, saying her counterpart in Mexico has “committed to undertaking an investigation into the death of a Canadian citizen on Mexican soil” and she wants “to assure Canadians that our consular officials are on the ground assisting the remaining victims.”

"We’re convinced that World Cup security is guaranteed. As we’ve said, this unfortunate event had never happened at an archaeological site in our country.” Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar Harfuch said on Tuesday, “we will now also strengthen security in archaeological zones in coordination with the Secretary of Culture and the other authorities."
