For the last three months, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have carried out a 4,500km snowmobile patrol across the Arctic to exercise Canada’s military and defence capabilities in the far north.

Traveling from the Yukon-Alaska border to Churchill, Man., CAF soldiers and Canadian Rangers transported artillery to the nation’s northern-most point, Cambridge Bay, Nvt. — braving blizzards, frostbite and temperatures between minus 30 and 60 degrees Celsius along the way — in preparation for potential foreign threats in the future.

This comes one month after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new deepwater port in Grays Bay, Nvt., military forward operation locations in Yellowknife, Inuvik and Iqaluit, as well as several highway projects to serve as an all-season economic corridor for the region.

Amid Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex both Greenland and Canada, Carney has focused heavily on shoring up its Arctic defence capabilities since coming into power.
