From USA TODAY.
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and attendees dropped to the floor after gunshots were heard inside the Washington Hilton hotel where the event was taking place on April 25.
"Everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement," Trump told reporters during a news briefing, after the authorities evacuated him and other top officials to the White House.
The president said the suspect in the incident shot one Secret Service officer at close range, but he was saved by a bulletproof vest. Trump said he spoke to the officer, who was in "high spirits," and told the man "we love him and respect him."
