Poilievre demands feds create strategic oil stockpile amid Iran energy blockade

From Global News.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre ramped up his calls for a strategic oil and natural gas stockpile during question period Wednesday.

“Today, we have the hilarious spectacle of the Liberal natural resource minister saying Canada will do what it can to help with its stockpiles for the current energy shortage. Our stockpiles are zero,” he said.

“We have a maple syrup stockpile…. We don’t have any oil to supply the world in this time of crisis,” he added.

Iran’s military command on Wednesday said the world should prepare for oil to hit $200 a barrel, as more ships have come under attack in the blockaded Gulf.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, in response to the Conservative leader, said Canada’s oil exports have “never been higher” and said Canada exports more than 5 million barrels of oil per day.

The prime minister also said he is in talks with G7 leaders to release 400 million barrels from the group’s strategic reserves.
