“Trapped in a war that it did not choose”: Lebanon seeks end to Israel and Hezbollah conflict

From Global News.

Lebanon told the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday that it was “trapped” in a war that “it did not choose” between Israel and Hezbollah, as Beirut pushed for a truce.

Hostilities have escalated in the region since the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei with at least 600 killed and over 800,000 displaced in Lebanon; according to Lebanese authorities.

“Lebanon finds itself trapped in a war that it did not choose between Israel and Hezbollah.” Lebanon’s UN Ambassador, Ahmad Arafa said Wednesday, “Israel, which shows no respect for the laws of war and persists in its attacks on Lebanon, and Hezbollah, whose military and security activities have been pursued and deemed illegal by the Council of Ministers.”

Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon urged Beirut to take direct action and “push Hezbollah out,” stressing that Israel does not want to “operate inside Lebanon” but “must do whatever is necessary to stop them.”
