In 1943, a Swiss chemist named Albert Hofmann accidentally discovered LSD – and with it, a class of molecules that would spend the next 80 years confusing, inspiring, and ultimately rewriting modern neuroscience.
This is the story of how psychedelics went from accidental discovery, to clinical breakthrough, to banned substance, to the most promising new class of drugs in psychiatry – and how, after decades of being misunderstood, we finally figured out what they’re actually doing in the brain.
