Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce an "important initiative" aimed at diversifying trade on Thursday, as the Liberals prepare to meet in Montreal for their national convention.

The announcement comes a day after Carney announced longtime Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu had crossed the floor to join the Liberal caucus.

The Liberal convention, which runs Thursday through Saturday, starts ahead of three byelections set for Monday. Carney’s ever-expanding big tent of MPs puts Carney’s Liberals on the cusp of achieving a majority government following a series of floor-crossings in Parliament.
