From Global News.
With very little success stopping the flow of toxic drugs and their deadly effects, a new pilot program from B.C.’s provincial government might make a difference. The province is partnering with law enforcement and UBC researchers to roll out its Track and Trace pilot program to root out bad drugs at their source.
Using chemical analysis and AI software, the program gives police and health-care providers to get a real-time chemical fingerprint of drugs circulating on the streets.
“The illicit drug supply is changing faster than our warning systems,” said Nina Krieger, minister of public safety and solicitor general. “Track and Trace is an innovative technology that will allow early detection of emerging drug threats, provide clear insights into supply changes and risks, and improve co-ordination across jurisdictions in B.C.”
As Paul Johnson reports, ER doctors hope to learn more about the slight chemical changes in the toxic drug supply and how they can cause an overdose.
