Atmospheric river: How these powerful storms are becoming more destructive

If it feels like you’re hearing the term “atmospheric river” more often recently, you’re not imagining it.

An atmospheric river is a long, narrow band of concentrated water vapour in the sky. Typically 800 kilometres wide and 1,000 km long, they transport “more than double the flow of the Amazon River,” according to the Glossary of Meteorology.

But while atmospheric rivers play a crucial role in the global water cycle and help to replenish reservoirs, they can also bring devastating flooding and debris flows.

Global News Meteorologist Kristi Gordon explains how these powerful storms are changing and why they are becoming more frequent and destructive.
