Feds’ fiscal update spending pledges lack details: PBO

From Global News.

Supporting the troops is at the core of the Liberals political and fiscal vision. But the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) is calling into question the government’s transparency over tens of billions in new defence spending — part of a trend from the Carney government.

The Liberals’ spring economic statement had no details on future defense spending, not accounting for new fighter jets, submarines and billions in other purchases to try and get Canada to the new NATO target of 5 per cent of GDP on defence spending by 2035.

Christian Leuprecht from the Royal Military College of Canada said, “It’s very difficult to be taken seriously by our allies and by the Trump administration when we don’t have a plan to make our words match our actions.”

As Mackenzie Gray reports, the PBO estimates hitting the NATO target will cost an additional $159 billion and not including that is a risk to future deficit projections.
