Medical evacuations take place amid hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship

From Global News.

Outfitted in full PPE, medical teams escorted sick passengers off a cruise ship on Wednesday that was hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak. Three individuals who are suspected to have contracted hantavirus have been taken to the airport to receive medical care abroad. Meanwhile, the ship along with the rest of the passengers on board, is bound for the Canary Islands.

“At the present time, we have eight suspected cases, of which three have died, three have been confirmed, and these cases are all associated with the ship. We have one patient that is currently in ICU in South Africa who’s actually doing better,” WHO official Maria Van Kerkhove said.

As Katherine Ward reports, WHO officials are working closely with Spanish authorities on next steps.
