Honda EV plant rumoured to shut down amid CUSMA renegotiations

From Global News.

A Japanese report suggests Honda Motor Co. is halting its plans to construct a $15-billion electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Canada. A spokesperson for Honda Canada told Global News that “the content of the article was not released by Honda, and we have nothing to report at this time.”

“American tariffs and changes to U.S. domestic policies are creating real pressures for automakers, prompting some to delay or scale back investments in electric vehicle and battery projects,” a spokesperson for Industry Minister Mélanie Joly’s office said in an emailed statement, however, they did not clarify whether Honda had communicated any plans to scale back to Ottawa.

The project, slated to begin production in 2028, was set to receive $5 billion in federal and provincial funding, however both governments have said those funds have not yet been spent.

As Jillian Piper reports, Japanese officials have made it clear that U.S. market access is critical for their automakers to maintain increased investment in Canada.
