From Global News.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre returned to the House of Commons Tuesday, where the latter demanded Carney apologize to Canadians for a “bizarre” claim he made last month about affordability.
“Affordability is the best it has been in over a decade,” Carney said during question period on March 25.
Poilievre, however, noted that, for the fourth consecutive month, “Canada had the highest food price inflation in the G7 under this Liberal prime minister.” This after a Monday report from Statistics Canada revealed the price of fresh vegetables rose 7.8 per cent in March — the largest increase since August 2023.
“Will he [Carney] just stand up? Admit he’s human, that he made a mistake, that he goofed up, and that he got it wrong on affordability?” Poilievre asked Monday. “This prime minister is completely out of touch and Canadians are completely out of money,” he added.
In response, Carney said, “Canadian average wages have grown faster than the rate of inflation,” before reminding the Conservatives of the upcoming ‘Groceries and Essentials Benefit’ set to aid over 12 million Canadians on June 5.
“I want to read into the record for the benefit of the Leader of the Opposition: I worked for Canadians and only Canadians,” Carney said.
