Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada must address “weaknesses” created by its close ties to the United States, warning the country can no longer rely on its largest trading partner.

“Many of our former strengths based on our close ties to America have become our weaknesses,” he said in a video posted to YouTube on Sunday.

Carney said his government will focus on diversifying trade partners, attracting investment and building new economic and energy corridors across Canada; drawing examples from Canadian history as inspiration for his government’s vision.

He added the plan also includes strengthening industries hit by U.S. tariffs and making the economy more self-reliant at home.
