From Global News.
Travellers experienced prolonged wait times at various U.S. airports due to the ongoing partial government shutdown on Monday. At Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had been deployed to assist TSA agents. U.S. President Donald Trump first proposed the move on Saturday if Democrats did not agree on a deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
Before departing from Palm Beach Florida, Trump said “I want to thank ICE because they stepped in so, so strongly. They’ll do great. And if that’s not enough, I’ll bring in the National Guard.”
Meanwhile, travellers expressed mixed reactions to the presence of ICE in airports.
“Honestly, I think it’d be a good look because agents from another agency is a good thing and if it’s making America safe," one man said.
Another traveller said, "America should be the land of the free and, like, everyone deserves equal rights and it wouldn’t seem right if ICE was coming in here.”
