During the pandemic, millions of Canadians relied on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, or CERB. People who signed up received an automated message — but tens of thousands who never applied also received the same message.
“The CRA website lacked robust security controls to prevent criminals from hijacking people’s accounts,” says David Shipley of Beauceron Security.
Because of that security gap, the federal government has been ordered to pay $8.7 million to settle a class-action lawsuit.
Hackers targeted CRA accounts at least three times in 2020, using stolen information to impersonate victims.
