The ball remains in Iran’s court as it mulls an American proposal to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and chart a path for a broader agreement — key issues that have so far been impossible to rectify.

Negotiators have been working behind the scenes for weeks, but it’s unclear in Iran who is in control, with its leader unseen since he was appointed.

Threatening new strikes if Tehran doesn’t play ball has only emboldened Iranians who again took to the streets to back a government that many see as a protector of their future.
