Feds announce Telus AI data centre expansion in BC for “sovereign” computing | FULL

From Global News.

AI Minister Evans Solomon was in Vancouver, B.C. on Monday, where he announced that Telus B.C.’s "sovereign" AI factory was advancing under the federal government’s data centre initiative to enable AI infrastructure in Canada.

In January, the government launched the call-out for "sovereign AI data centres, and we asked, ‘who’s ready to build sovereign AI infrastructure in Canada at scale with Canadian values," Solomon said, adding that "160 proposals came through" after the initial call-out.

The minister said Monday’s announcement was the first publicly announced project that moved Canada towards enabling "large-scale sovereign AI data centres" to compete with the global AI boom.

He also said that the project would be sustainable and draw 98 per cent of its power from B.C.’s hydro renewable resources.
