U.S. President Donald Trump is set to tour the Temple of Heaven with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to Beijing on Thursday, May 14, according to the White House. 

The sprawling imperial complex turned tourist site is significant as a location where emperors once cemented their political legitimacy and “received the mandate from heaven” to rule China.
Trump is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on May 13 and stay through May 15. After the tour, Trump meeting with Xi is expected to address tariffs and China’s purchases of soybeans, grains and meat from the US. The talks are being met with a mix of skepticism and cautious optimism by Chinese residents interviewed on the grounds.
