Beckerman’s book is part philosophy, part history, and part manual for living with integrity in an age of conformity and authoritarian drift. In How to Be a Dissident Beckerman is on a quest to find role models, drawing on the stories of dissidents from around the globe and across time, to help us understand how we push back in a world where political leaders wield fear and intimidation and we slide into authoritarianism. Harris and Beckerman will discuss the defining characteristics that such extraordinary figures share, and they will highlight that dissidence is a human capacity we can all cultivate to help us navigate the pressures of modern tyranny.
