From AFP News Agency.
AFP journalists Genya Savilov and Maryke Vermaak venture into the contaminated heart of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which suffered a massive meltdown in 1986. Their trip was undertaken as part of their reporting on the 40th anniversary of the accident, and comes as the closed-off disaster zone faces another challenge: in February 2025 a Russian drone strike left a large hole in the outer of two radiation shields covering the remnants of the nuclear power plant. Fundraising is currently underway to pay for an estimated €500 million ($580 million) of repairs.
