From Global News.
Canada’s former chief trade negotiator, Steve Verheul, said Thursday that he is “not convinced” the Canada-US-Mexico (CUSMA) will bear any fruit in the foreseeable future.
Steve Verheul said during the Public Policy Forum in Toronto, Ont., that Canada and the U.S. are still “too far apart” on their respective demands heading into a formal CUSMA review.
Preparatory negotiations on the CUSMA trade deal are underway ahead of a formal comprehensive review of the pact.
“Canada can’t force the U.S. to a conclusion, or force the U.S. even to an end game,” Verheul said, adding that tariff exemptions in place as a result of CUSMA are taking pressure off negotiations.
He also added that we may see some trade pressures ease as Trump’s tariff policy could moderate over time.
