Global News has learned that the Chinese consulate in Vancouver tried to stop an arts performance that highlights Communist Party repression.

Chinese consular officials met last month with Vancouver city hall staff.

Sources say the Chinese officials pressured the city’s director of civic theatres into cancelling performances by the Shen Yun dance group.

The performance went ahead, but the incident suggests China is continuing its efforts to silence dissent in Canada
