Exploring Louise Arbour’s resume and her new role as governor general

From Global News.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed former Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour to replace Mary Simon as Canada’s next governor general on Tuesday.

Journalist, writer, and academic, John Fraser joins Global’s Antony Robart to give his early thoughts on Louise Arbour being named Canada’s 31st governor general, and to break down the roles and functions of the position.

“Early thoughts are always ones that should be held in check,” Fraser said, “but on the surface what a wonderful appointment. A world-famous jurist, person of warmth, bilingual, you can check all the boxes that the prime minister was supposed to check before appointing someone and she checks most of them.”

Arbour, who was born in Montreal, served as a Supreme Court justice from 1999 to 2004. Prior to serving in Canada’s highest court, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1987 and the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 1990.
