Geoff Bennett on his new book and the ‘golden age’ of Black sitcoms

From PBS NewsHour.

The 1990s brought an unprecedented boom of Black sitcoms to televisions across the country, from the sketch comedy of “In Living Color” to popular shows like “A Different World” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” It’s a cultural moment Geoff Bennett explores in his new book, “Black Out Loud: The Revolutionary History of Black Comedy from Vaudeville to ’90s Sitcoms.” He joins Amna Nawaz for a special episode of Settle In to discuss the conditions that allowed these shows to flourish, the long lineage of Black comedians who paved the way and the lasting effects of an era often called the “golden age” of Black sitcoms.
