Government not responsible for enforcement of Canada census, Justice minister says

From Global News.

During a press conference in Darmouth, N.S., on Tuesday, Justice Minister Sean Fraser was asked if the federal Liberal government would impose fines on Canadians who do not fill out the 2026 census.

Though Fraser pointed out that the government was not responsible for the enforcement of — or any fines related to — filling out the federally-mandated quinquennial document, he said citizens who refuse to complete and submit the census are “weakening [their] position in the [Canadian] Federation.”

“If you choose not to fill out the census, you’re really only doing your community and your province a disservice,” Fraser said. “We’ll leave the enforcement of the rules to independent authorities, as should always be the case,” he added.

Fraser’s response comes May 12, the day the federal census is due. Failure to complete the document can result in a fine of up to $500, according to the federal Statistics Act.
