How to Seal and Vent a Hot Roof | This Old House

From This Old House.

Kevin O’Connor finds Matt Whitbeck on the roof of the Saratoga house, inspecting the ridge as the roofing crew works below them. Kevin notes an atypical detail: underlayment covering the ridge. Matt explains how roofs are typically vented (a “cold roof”) and why. He also points out that there will be mechanicals in the attic, which would pose various issues if left in a vented space. This roof will have spray foam under the roof deck—a completely airtight and ventless system called a “hot roof”. It’s an approach that’s been around for a while—but it has one main flaw that’s been discovered over time: rotting at the ridge. Matt has a fix for it: the diffusion vent.
