A focal point of the new addition will be a gas fireplace, which will be delivered late in the construction schedule as finishes are going in. To jump on things and keep the schedule moving, Jason Whitbeck and Mark McCullough install a slate hearth. It needs to meet code and the fireplace company’s installation specs, so they’ll need to install a special substrate first. During the process, Mark explains to Jason everything he’d have to do if this were a wood-burning fireplace.
