Residents of Torrance, California, expressed shock over the weekend after discovering their neighbour was the suspect involved in the White House Correspondent’s Dinner shooting that happened on Saturday night.

“This suspect was pretty much in the community and in our daily lives. My brother in law went to the same college as when he did exactly around the same time. Again, our daughter does physical or speech therapy this week. Next to it is where he was teaching at the educational center,” Courtney Ramiro, a Torrance resident, said, “to go to this kind of extreme, it’s unreal, honestly, it’s so surreal.”

Various residents of Washington D.C. were also concerned about the rise of political violence in the states. “Obviously it’s very weird when it’s across the street from you. But I know a lot of people were saying it was a hoax. A lot of people, it seems both sides, some people were happy that it happened, which is always disturbing to hear but, I don’t know. It’s just more reinforcement that it’s a scary time.”

The suspect will be charged in federal court on Monday with assault of a federal officer, discharging a firearm and attempting to kill a federal officer.
