Japan Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi observes Japanese forces participating in live-fire drills as part of the Balikatan military exercises. A Japanese contingent of about 1,400 personnel is taking part for the first time in the annual US-Philippine war games. A day earlier, Koizumi met with his counterpart in Manila and pledged to fast-track the transfer of ageing destroyers to the Philippine navy.
