Judge quashes Alberta separation petition over lack of Indigenous input

From CBC News.

An Alberta judge overruled the provincial chief electoral officer’s approval of a petition seeking a referendum on separating from the rest of Canada.

One of the core reasons for quashing the approval was that the judge found the province failed in its duty to consult with the applicants: Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Blood Tribe, Piikani Nation and Siksika First Nation.

Premier Danielle Smith says her province plans to appeal the judge’s ruling.
