From Global News.
A new report from Second Harvest reveals 23 per cent of Canada’s avoidable food waste stems from confusion over date-coding. That translates to over $12-billion worth of perfectly safe food thrown in the trash every year. So why are these tiny, stamped dates causing such a massive multi-billion-dollar problem?
“Because nobody understands what best before day means, people that are in the toughest situations that really can’t afford to throw away food are throwing it away, because they think it’s about safety,” Second Harvest CEO Lori Nikkel said.
As Jazan Grewal reports, Health Canada only requires date coding for items lasting 90 days or less, yet the report indicates that non-mandatory labels on shelf-stable products continue to confuse consumers.
