After a judge quashed a separatist petition on Wednesday, the Alberta provincial government is promising to appeal the court ruling.

The ruling held that Alberta’s separation would violate treaty rights and that the government failed in its duty to consult with First Nations.

Premier Danielle Smith has called the ruling incorrect and “anti-democratic.”

In the wake of that bombshell decision, the biggest question now facing Albertans is: what happens next?
