Ottawa announces plan to eliminate aviation backlogs; mandates compensation within 30 days

From Global News.

Minister of Transport Steven Mackinnon announced Friday that the government is taking steps to remove the backlog of complaints in aviation.

"Canadians deserve better. It must be fixed, and we’re here to announce the fix," MacKinnon said.

MacKinnon said the government would take "immediate steps" to clear the backlog by engaging a neutral, third-party dispute resolution organization to "apply private sector know-how and lessons learned."

Carriers must pay compensation within 30 days, and, in addition to processing claims, the government will establish a more effective regulatory framework that will make the rules clearer so that passengers are compensated "fairly and more quickly when the flight does not go as planned."
