I Survived 17 Years On Death Row | Minutes With

From LADbible Stories.

In this week’s episode of Minutes With, we had the pleasure of speaking to Juan Roberto Melendez-Colon, who spent nearly 18 years on Florida’s death row for a murder he did not commit.

Jaun tells us about the terrifying moment he was arrested by the FBI and the murder trial that followed. Despite no physical evidence linking him to the crime and presenting four alibi witnesses, Juan was sentenced to death by the electric chair.

In this episode, Juan reveals the toughest moments of life as a death row inmate, like sharing his cell with cockroaches, huge rats and seeing the lights flicker as the electric chair was used on his fellow inmates.

Juan was finally released from federal prison in 2002, aged 51, when a tape recording of the real murderer’s confession was uncovered. Juan became the 99th death row inmate to be released and exonerated in the United States since 1973. Now an activist against capital punishment, Juan reveals that he doesn’t look back on his wrongful conviction with anger, but instead has learned the power of forgiveness.
