An Alberta separatist group says it’s one step closer to a referendum on whether the province should leave Canada. Stay Free Alberta needed to collect 178,000 signatures to prompt Alberta to put the question to voters. 

"They claim to have gotten to the threshold number a little bit more. But we don’t know if that’s true; we don’t know how many of those names are fake. We don’t know how many of those people didn’t actually sign the petition," NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said.
