The Met Gala is known for its eye-popping looks, ultra-exclusive guest list and now an embrace of a polarizing tech CEO that’s drawing protests. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez were named honorary chairs after reportedly donating $10 million to the fundraiser.

“This is sort of like Versailles or something, you know, like these people partying when people are hungry and where there’s all these like global inequity happening,” Seneca College fashion professor Mark O’Connell said.

Several well-known figures have decided to skip fashion’s biggest night, including Zendaya, Meryl Streep, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who says the event is out of step with his priorities on affordability.

As Touria Izri reports, protesters have put posters up across New York, urging people to boycott what they’ve dubbed the Bezos’ Met Gala.
