Heavy winds and rain battered Saipan on Tuesday as Super Typhoon Sinlaku, a powerful Category 5 storm, moved closer to the Northern Mariana Islands.
The National Weather Service in Guam issued warnings for Saipan. Meanwhile, The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) in Guam said on Tuesday that Sinlaku was located about 70 miles southeast of Saipan, packing maximum sustained winds of 266 km/h and moving northwest.
The NWS warned winds across Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan and Tinian, were expected to reach typhoon force through the afternoon and evening; urging residents to remain sheltered as conditions rapidly deteriorated.
