The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, asked for a public sign of peace on Friday, calling on the Israeli and Palestinian delegations to shake hands at a meeting ahead of next month’s World Cup.

The Palestinian official refused.

“This was a political spectacle more than it was a real effort to engage in any kind of peace-making,” says Jules Boykoff, a political scientist at Pacific University and former Team USA soccer player.
