For many Alberta First Nations, Wednesday’s court ruling was a major win.
“What a great victory it is for Albertans that don’t want to separate and Canadians alike,” said Chief Allan Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation.
The decision quashing a citizens initiative petition calling for a referendum on Alberta’s separation because it violates treaty rights.
“We think there has been an error in law which is why we’re going to be appealing it, and we think it’s anti-democratic,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
