Spirit Airlines goes out of business after 34 years, ending operations immediately

From Global News.

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines is ceasing operations after nearly thirty-four years in business, leaving many passengers stranded. The ultra-low-cost airline announced on Saturday that it is cancelling all flights effective immediately.

Spirit has faced financial struggles for years and has been heavily impacted by rising jet fuel costs in recent months. The airline filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2024 and again last summer.

"What Spirit Airlines is now going to do is go through an orderly liquidation process. We’ll see how that develops over the course of the next several days," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

Meanwhile, Senior Vice President and Chief Airport Hub Officer at United Airlines, Mike Hanna, said that United Airlines is here to help Spirit Airlines passengers and employees.
