The 1938 Phantom Corsair: The “Flying Wombat” That Was Too Futuristic to Live | Jay Leno’s Garage

From Jay Leno’s Garage.

Jay Leno steps back into the future with one of the most enigmatic cars ever built: the 1938 Phantom Corsair. Often referred to as "The Flying Wombat" due to its appearance in the 1938 film The Young in Heart, this Art Deco masterpiece looks like it was plucked straight from a Batman comic. Jay is joined by Phil MacDougall, President of the National Automobile Museum (formerly the Harrah Collection) in Reno, to separate the myths from the mechanical reality of this aluminum-bodied icon. Built on a modified 1936 Cord 810 chassis, the Corsair was the brainchild of Rust Heinz, heir to the "57 Varieties" fortune. Heinz dreamed of a production run for this $24,000 "supercar" (over $500,000 in today’s money), but the project was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident at just 25 years old.
