“Viruses don’t care about our politics”: WHO gives update on US relationship amid hantavirus spread

From Global News.

Amid the cluster outbreak of a deadly strain of hantavirus on a Dutch cruise ship, the World Health Organization (WHO) has addressed its current relationship with the U.S. after the country cut ties with the international health agency.

Since several U.S. citizens are aboard the passenger vessel, Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed interactions were “as they used to be,” meaning the WHO is actively sharing developments while receiving information from the U.S. side and the CDC.

Despite the U.S. finalizing its withdrawal from WHO in January — one year after President Donald Trump announced America would end its 78-year-old commitment — Ghebreyesus had this to say on the WHO’s continued collaboration with America: “Viruses don’t care about our politics.”

“Because of the event that’s happening now… I think they will reconsider,” Ghebreyesus said of Trump’s withdrawal. “Viruses don’t care about our politics, and they don’t care about our borders, and they don’t care about all the excuses that we may have,” he added.
