Global National: March 21, 2026 | Iran fires ballistic missiles at US-UK military base

From Global News.

For the first time, Iran launched ballistic missiles aimed at a U.K.-U.S. military base in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, the main pressure point remains the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply. Tehran is blocking this vital route, upending the global energy industry. The U.S. military now states that Iran’s ability to target the Strait has been degraded, and President Trump says he is considering winding down the war. At the same time, U.S. warships and thousands of additional marines are now heading to the region. Candice Cole has the top story.

As the war in Iran pushes oil prices higher, Canadians are paying more at the pumps; particularly in Alberta. But Canada’s economy is simultaneously reaping the rewards, thanks to billions in additional oil revenue. Mackenzie Gray reports.

Meanwhile, Ukrainians are concerned that the conflict in the Middle East is helping Russia’s war machine, not only because it’s drawing attention from Ukraine, but also because Russia, like Canada, is benefiting from a surge in oil revenues. The energy crisis has also prompted the U.S. to temporarily ease some sanctions on Russian oil shipments. Vincent McAviney reports.

Plus, a powerful part of Canadian history received long-overdue global recognition on this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The history of the Black Loyalists has been officially added to Canada’s Memory of the World Register — a UNESCO program dedicated to preserving the country’s national heritage. Kendra Gannon reports.
