“Deescalation” a priority for Canada amid ongoing war in Iran, Anand says

From Global News.

Asked if the Canadian government would consider calling for a ceasefire in Iran as the U.S. and Israel continue their joint military operation to topple the Iranian regime, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said “deescalation” is its priority in the expanding conflict.

Speaking in Parliament Thursday, Anand said Canada was taking things “one step at a time” and has been working with Middle Eastern countries to “identify off-ramps” and “ensure deescalation occurs” to ensure the safety of civilian lives.

On whether she has spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the matter, Anand said Canada will meet with all other G7 nations in Paris to discuss matters.

Though Canada’s relations with the U.S. have been fragmented since President Donald Trump imposed tariffs last year, Anand ensured that she will highlight the importance that the Iranian population’s “Integrity and human rights are protected and respected, and that international law is upheld.”

Alongside, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai, Anand is set to make an announcement related to the unfolding situation in the Middle East – noting that that it will be related to funding for humanitarian aid.
