“Bad for the region”: German locals react to US troop withdrawal

From Global News.

The Pentagon announced late Friday it would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany following a spat between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the ongoing Iran war.

Local residents of the western German town Landstuhl, near the U.S. air base in Ramstein, expressed concerns over the impact it would have on the community.

“Americans weren’t just part of society. Some of them really did live among us quite normally. Not all of them were isolated, but they provided jobs, they rented houses and flats,” one resident said.

“I think that’s bad for the region. After all, many Americans spend a lot of money here. I think that would be bad,” another resident said.

Data from the U.S. Defense Manpower Data Center shows the U.S. has about 36,400 active-duty military personnel based in Germany.
