From Global News.
For thousands of years, glaciers in British Columbia have stayed in balance, melting and growing with the seasons. But new research shows that balance is broken. Glacier scientists believe it’s no longer a question of if many of British Columbia’s small glaciers will disappear — it’s a question of when.
“Western Canada is, in many ways, right in the bullseye of the rapid accelerated loss that we’re seeing for many mountain glaciers on planet Earth,” UNBC Earth Sciences professor Brian Menounos said. “The amount of water being lost in the first decade of the 21st century was on the order of about seven to eight gigatons per year.”
As Kristi Gordon reports, glaciers have been a part of British Columbia’s identity, beauty and cultural significance for many First Nations for thousands of years and while they won’t disappear overnight, their loss will change rivers, ecosystems and landscapes forever.
