Multiple European leaders echoed statements of surprise and criticism on Friday over the United States’ decision to temporarily ease sanctions on Russian oil.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “This single easing (of sanctions) by America could provide Russia with approximately 10 billion dollars for the war. This certainly does not help peace.” Zelenskyy made the remarks at a join press conference in Paris alongside France’s Emmanuel Macron.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz questioned the motives behind the American government’s decision, claiming “there is currently a price problem, but not a quantity problem.”

The waiver for countries to buy sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products is set to expire April 11.
